SUMMARY:Shattered Nation: inequality and geography of a failing state
DESCRIPTION:AN IN-PERSON AND ONLINE EVENT:\nBritain was once the leading economy in Europe; it is now the most unequal. Fifty years ago the UK led the world in child health; today\, twenty-two of the twenty-seven EU countries have better mortality rates for newborns. No other European country has such miserly unemployment benefits; university fees so high; housing so unaffordable; or a government economically so far to the right.\nTo mark the launch of his new book Shattered Nation\, geographer Danny Dorling will explain why we are growing further and further apart\, exposing a new geography of inequality.

SUMMARY:Europe Calling “Eine neue Verfassung für Europa” - " A new Constitution for Europe"
DESCRIPTION:The European Union could soon be writing a new constitution: on Wednesday\, 25.10.2023\, the Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO) of the European Parliament will vote on whether the EU Parliament should start the process for amendments to the EU Treaties and whether a Constitutional Convention should be convened for this purpose. \nThe initiative to amend the treaties is supported by all five pro-democracy groups in the Parliament. \nThe ambitious changes suggested include: national vetoes to give way to majority decisions\, the European Parliament to become a more powerful legislator with equal rights and the EU Commission to become a real government – subordinate to the Parliament. That is\, fundamental changes to the EU – as was demanded by the citizens at the EU Future Conference. \nThe five MEPs who have been dealing with these questions will lead the discussion together with representatives from science\, civil society and politics. \nIn German and English.

SUMMARY:Leave to Remain: A Snapshot of Brexit
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Noni Stacey will discuss her latest book Leave to Remain: A Snapshot of Brexit and there is an opportunity to see LSE Library’s Brexit archives\, some of which were used for the preparation of the book. Art and photography have played a key role in capturing and reflecting on the conditions for the Brexit referendum and in this impassioned and compelling book Dr Stacey explores the role of the photograph and sometimes moving image in the ongoing consequences of what she views as a political cataclysm. \nDr Noni Stacey is a writer and researcher. She is currently a Practice Supervisor for writing at Royal Academy of Art\, The Hague (KABK)\, and Visiting Research Fellow at TU Dublin.

SUMMARY:Brexit: a failed project in a failing state?
DESCRIPTION:Danny Dorling\, Halford Mackinder Professor\, School of Geography and the Environment\, University of Oxford\, introduces his provocative new report\, Brexit: a failed project in a failing state. He argues the sorry story is a symptom of a broken society\, one wrapped up in nostalgia for an imagined past and unable to address the numerous genuine problems of the 21st century. Surveying key data indicators\, he reports Brexit has failed to address any of the substantive challenges of the day\, it was not a ‘year zero’ for the many problems facing the United Kingdom and\, in fact\, reflected decades of public policy failure. \nHe is joined by Zoe Williams\, Guardian columnist and the discussion is chaired by Luke Cooper (@lukecooper100)\, an Associate Professorial Research Fellow in International Relations at LSE IDEAS\, LSE’s in-house foreign policy think tank and director of PeaceRep’s Ukraine programme.

SUMMARY:Rejoining the EU - Why\, When and How?
DESCRIPTION:In this Fourth Thursday webinar from London4Europe\, Brendan Donnelly\, Director of the Federal Trust and a former Conservative MEP\, will make the case for rejoining the EU. He will compare and contrast the ways in which this might be achieved\, and reflect on what changes might be needed in the UK and the EU to make it possible. Donnelly attributes the recent tentative improvement in relations between the EU and the British Government to the growing realisation by the British government that Brexit has failed to produce economic or political advantages for the country. \nFor further details and to register for this webinar\, click Zoom link below.

SUMMARY:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED Freedom of Movement: the Key to Rejoin - A toolkit for pro-EU campaigners THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED \nFreedom of movement of people (along with free movement of goods\, services\, and capital)\, is a fundamental principle of the EU Single Market. There can be no return to the Single Market or the EU without FoM.  \nOpposition to FoM is based on a mistaken belief that FoM means uncontrolled immigration. The public is not well informed on this issue\, a factor which greatly assisted the leave campaign. People are now becoming more aware that ending FoM affects their own and their families’ choices\, as well as undermining the UK economy\, impacting the workforce in key industries\, impeding business travel and decimating the arts. FoM is strongly supported by the public in all EU member states. \nThe aim of this webinar is to equip pro-EU activists for a campaign to restore FoM\, and so open the door to Single Market and EU membership.  \nThe webinar will provide the basis for a crib sheet for FoM campaigners.  \nChair: Richard Kilpatrick (Campaign Manager\, European Movement) \nMichaela Benson (Professor in Public Sociology\, Lancaster University): Debunking FoM myths \nRichard Bentall (Professor of Clinical Psychology\, Sheffield University) : A positive narrative on FoM \nMark English (Policy and Media Advisor\, European Movement) : Strategy and tactics for a campaign to restore FoM \nMike Galsworthy (Chair\, European Movement) : On the timing of a campaign to restore FoM

SUMMARY:How Do We Move On From Brexit?
DESCRIPTION:It has been three years since the United Kingdom left the European Union – and over seven since it voted to do so. The UK/EU relationship remains a subject of bitter debate\, with ‘leave’ and ‘remain’ identities persisting to this day. The 2024 general election will be the first post-Brexit election – but no major political party is fully acknowledging the negative impact of our exit from the EU. Will a new government mend relations with the EU or simply continue with the current chaos? \nThe Guardian’s special correspondent Heather Stewart will be joined by Guardian columnists Rafael Behr and Polly Toynbee\, and Anand Menon\, director of the UK In A Changing Europe and Professor of European Politics & Foreign Affairs at King’s College London\, to dissect the real legacy of Brexit. What needs to happen for the UK to finally move on? They will also be answering your questions in this livestreamed event.

SUMMARY:Expansion of the EU: Opportunity or threat?
DESCRIPTION:A formal decision to open EU membership negotiations with Ukraine and Moldova is due in December with other countries set to follow\, potentially taking the bloc from an already unwieldy club of 27 to more than 35. \nOur panel\, including political scientists Ivan Krastev and Nathalie Tocci\, German MEP Viola von Cramon and chaired by the Guardian’s Europe correspondent Jon Henley\, will explore how much the EU will need to transform internally if it is to function as a group of 35. SUMMARY:EU Environmental Policy – its relevance post-Brexit
DESCRIPTION:Nigel Haigh\, OBE\, Honorary Fellow of the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)\, will outline the history of the involvement of the EU in environmental matters\, and the consequences on UK environmental policy of the 2016 referendum result. It is suggested that the biggest long-term impact of Brexit on environmental policy will be to increasingly weaken the UK’s influence on global environmental issues. \nNigel will explain that environmental policy (not just climate change) is at the centre of the EU and is a popular subject with the public. He will argue that the European Movement would do well to pay more attention to environmental policy. Finally\, he will outline some steps that an incoming Government could take to bring the UK closer to the EU. \nThe talk will be followed by a panel discussion\, including Klajdi Selimi\, President of the Young European Movement; and Michael Nicholson\, Head of UK Environmental Policy\, IEEP UK and a Q & A from the online participants.
