SUMMARY:A perfect storm of crises: Virtual meeting with Lord John Alderdice and Vicky Pryce
DESCRIPTION:The harms done to the UK’s economy and reputation by Brexit have been compounded by the pandemic\, Ukraine and the cost of living crisis. At the same time the country is suffering an absence of competent leadership and a collapse of trust in government. Remorse over the Northern Ireland Protocol is raising the threat of political instability and trade war with our nearest neighbours. \nTo discuss the crisis: John Alderdice\, Baron Alderdice\, of Knock in the City of Belfast is a former Northern Ireland politician. As Leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland he played a significant role in negotiating the 1998 Good Friday Agreement\, and when the Northern Ireland Assembly was elected\, he became its first Speaker. Since 1996 has sat in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat. \nAnd Vicky Pryce\, one of our best-known economic commentators. Her recent posts have included: Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting; Director General for Economics at the Department for Business\, Innovation and Skills (BIS); and Joint Head of the UK Government Economics Service where she was responsible for evidence based policy and for encouraging measures that promoted greater productivity in the UK economy. She co-founded GoodCorporation\, a company set up to promote corporate social responsibility.

This hybrid event (in person and online) is a conversation about national identity\, devolution\, and independence. But it’s also a discussion about electoral reform\, the need for a written constitution\, and the wholesale democratic renewal we all need. \nJournalist and former presenter of Newsnight Gavin Esler has travelled around the country documenting the rise of nationalism in all four nations\, and considering the consequences for the United Kingdom as a whole. Join us in conversation with Gavin about how democratic renewal might be the answer to to Britain’s problems. \nYou can attend this event either online or in person. SUMMARY:Defending Human Rights in Europe and the UK
DESCRIPTION:The UK used to have a much-lauded reputation for safeguarding and promoting human rights. and the European Court of Human Rights and the Convention that goes with it are very much inspired by post-War British politicians and thinkers. But Dominic Raab\, restored to his post as Justice Secretary\, is determined to press ahead with legislation on giving a proposed British Bill of Rights precedence over the ECHR – not least by enabling deportation flights to Rwanda and elsewhere. How has it come to this? Join us in our latest webinar which will focus on the threat to human rights in the UK and elsewhere and the role of the ECHR in upholding them. \nRegister for this Zoom event via the Eventbrite link below.

SUMMARY:Alexandra von Westernhagen: EU Citizenship - What is it and what could it be?
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra von Westernhagen – Partner in EU Competition & Regulatory Law\, Keystone Law (London) and Liberius Legal (Brussels) will discuss citizenship (which is internationally accepted as a synonym for “nationality”) has been considered as one of the most fundamental human rights. It is protected by a number of International Human Rights legal instruments\, including the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights\, which states that “No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his nationality… “\, as well as the Council of Europe Convention on Citizenship\, which also prohibits the arbitrary withdrawal of citizenship. \nIn the wake of the UK leaving the EU\, several cases on the nature and scope of EU citizenship have been brought before the Court of Justice of the EU (see for example\, case T- 252/20). \nThe question in all these cases is whether with Brexit\, individuals who did not hold any nationality of an EU member state other than British nationality at the time of the UK’s exit from the EU have automatically lost their EU citizenship. \nIt also leads to several related questions which we will discuss during our session\, including: \n* What is EU citizenship? Is it a real citizenship?\n* Who grants EU citizenship?\n* Can you be a citizen of the Union without being a national of one of its member states?\n* Who can remove EU citizenship and under what conditions?\n* Could EU citizenship be the first citizenship in modern times that is not based on a territory?\n* If so\, what is it based on?

SUMMARY:Retained EU Law Bill webinar
DESCRIPTION:Campaigners including Caroline Lucas MP and Mhairi Snowden from Human Rights Consortium Scotland will discuss the risks of the Retained EU Law Bill\, and the best ways to campaign against it. \nIn the House of Commons last week\, MPs voted against amendments to delay the Retained EU Law Bill. This means that\, as it stands\, the Retained EU Law Bill will come into effect on December 31st\, 2023\, jeopardising the standards that keep us safe. \nThis webinar is the opportunity to ask questions on ways the bill could directly impact your area. DESCRIPTION:Over the course of 2022\, opinion polls have recorded a steady increase in anti-brexit sentiment. But the numbers for and against vary according to the wording of the question\, and the polls require interpretation. This webinar brings together three experts to discuss how to interpret the polling data\, and the implications for pro-EU campaigning. \nRichard Bentall is a professor of clinical psychology\, who will explain the psychology behind the response to different polling questions (Brexit going badly; Brexit wrong; greater alignment; rejoin EU). \nPeter Kellner\, who is past president of YouGov\, will consider the implications of recent polling for Labour party policy\, and how to bring them to bear on the party leadership. \nFlo Hutchings\, Political Director at Best for Britain\, will explain the novel technique of MRP polling and how it might be applied to EU-related issues to inform the strategies of local campaigns groups.

SUMMARY:Katy Hayward: Why the Northern Ireland Protocol is a Great British concern (and not for the reasons you think)
DESCRIPTION:Katy Hayward\, Professor of Political Sociology\, Queen’s University Belfast will discuss the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland that was signed as part of the UK-EU withdrawal Agreement in 2019 and was intended to resolve the particular difficulties for Northern Ireland arising from Brexit. But instead of clearing Northern Ireland from the UK and EU’s post-Brexit radars\, the debate around the Protocol has been central to tensions between them ever since. Katy will look at the Protocol from a slightly different perspective\, drawing on close monitoring of the Protocol’s development and implementation. She will show why the Protocol should be a concern to the public in Great Britain because of what it seeks to protect\, because of the way it has been handled\, and because what happens to it in future – for good or ill – will have implications for the whole of the United Kingdom.

SUMMARY:The Effects of Brexit on Women in the United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Much has been discussed about the wide-ranging consequences of the UK’s departure from the European Union\, especially in terms of the economy and mobility. However\, very little has been said about the social consequences particularly for women and their status in society and in the employment market. This topic is now being widely discussed in view of the government’s determination to push through as quickly as possible the Retained EU Law bill which will remove the legislation still in force from the period when Britain was a member of the EU\, much of which refers to social issues. \nThe Anglo-German Society\, Dortmund \, in association with Leeds For Europe\, would like to invite you to a Zoom talk by Ms Amanda Nanhoo-Robinson\, an experienced British barrister\, who will give an overview of the situation of women in Britain today and how the REUL Bill would affect their status in British society in the future. There will also be ample time for questions. To attend the event\, please join via the Zoom link below at the stated time\, using the Meeting ID 831 8848 5587 and the Passcode 646441
