Sir David Lidington\, Caroline Lucas MP\, and former UK Ambassador to the US\, Sir Peter Westmacott. \nWe want Britain to be a trusted\, leading and democratic trading ally that pursues multilateralist solutions to global problems. SUMMARY:The Future of UK-EU Relations
DESCRIPTION:With relations between the UK and the EU seemingly at an all time low\, how are we going to repair relationships and re-establish the connections we will need if the UK is going to embark on its journey back to the heart of Europe?  At this webinar we hear from two figures who will both have important roles to play in bridging the divide. \nSusanne Oberhauser is Head of the European Parliament Liaison Office in the UK.  German-born Susanne has worked for the European Parliament since 1991 and was appointed to head up the UK office\, in Smith Square in London\, in 2019 just as the UK was about to exit the EU. \nRichard Corbett CBE is an ex-MEP\, formerly head of the European Parliamentary Labour Party.  Since the UK’s departure from the EU\, Richard has maintained his links to the European Parliament\, where he is currently Deputy Head of Cabinet for Constitutional and Institutional Affairs.  He was also recently appointed to the Common Secretariat of the Conference on the Future of Europe.

SUMMARY:UK Trade and Business Commission: Food and Drink trade since 1 January 2021
DESCRIPTION:This session will look at UK food and drink trade\, the changes that came into force on January 1\, their impact\, how this can be mitigated\, and the way this may change for better or worse in the future. There will be a particular focus on Northern Ireland\, which is being treated as part of the EU in terms of rules covering goods products. \nDifferent products and sizes of exporter are affected in different ways\, with potentially different solutions\, and therefore we need to seek specific examples wherever possible. The impact of delaying checks on products coming into the UK should also be considered. \n Aodhán Connolly\, Director Northern Ireland Retail Consortium\, will be Chairing the session. \nWitnesses\n\n\nEmily Rees\, Senior Fellow at ECIPE and Managing Director at Trade Strategies \n\n\nKarin Goodburn\, Director General of the Chilled Food Association (CFA) \n\n\nNick Allen\, Chief Executive Officer of the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA) \n\n\nWilliam Bain\, Policy Advisor at the British Retail Consortium

SUMMARY:Delivery Workers in the Platform Economy
DESCRIPTION:Europe depends on workers moving. The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed vulnerabilities of these workers that preexisted the health crisis: mobile workers are more at risk of exploitation\, less likely to be well represented by trade unions and national authorities\, and have many specific needs when it comes to information\, to social protection and access to health services\, to secure housing and the possibility of crossing borders to care for their families.  Now it is time to move on from precarious Europe.  The EU Social Summit in Porto will be an important occasion for the European Union to commit to building a Europe in which no one falls between the gaps.\nEuropean Alternatives and Another Europe Is Possible gather together migrant workers\, workers’ collectives\, trade unions and NGOs fighting for the rights of migrant workers from inside and outside the EU.\nTogether we not only want to articulate problems and demands\, but also formulate policy recommendations to strengthen the rights of migrant workers.\nJoin our online event series to draft our open letter to the EU Commission.

SUMMARY:Europe Day Concert 2021
DESCRIPTION:We celebrate Portugal\, currently holding the Presidency of the EU Council. We also pay homage to The Divine Comedy of Dante\, whose 700th anniversary we mark this year. Top Portuguese lyric tenor Luis Gomes takes us from ‘Inferno’ – the word which begins an aria from Verdi’s opera Simon Boccanegra about the seafaring Genovese people – to ‘Purgatorio’ in the possibility of exile envisaged by Benjamin Godard’s Dante in an operatic rarity of 1890\, and finally heavenwards with da Gama’s ‘O paradis’ in Meyerbeer’s L’Africaine. \nOrchestrally\, we celebrate a hunt through fantastical woods in the ‘All’Ouvertura’ from Sibelius’s second set of Scènes Historiques\, then ocean journeys in Mendelssohn’s Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage and the poignant quotation of it in Elgar’s thirteenth ‘Enigma Variation’\, plus a rarity – the UK premiere of 99-year-old Estonian composer Ester Mägi’s The Sea. A train ride is succinctly and humorously etched in a Johann Strauss polka\, and locomotive loving Dvořák evokes the other side of the pond in the finale of his Ninth Symphony\, ‘From the New World’. The outstanding performances of Jonathan Bloxham and his Northern Chords Festival Orchestra of young and established professionals in the past three Europe Day Concerts guarantee a concert of the highest order.

SUMMARY:Celebration of Europe Day 2021
DESCRIPTION:Europe Day echoes our founder Robert Schuman’s appeal of May 9\, 1950: ‘Europe will not be made all at once\, or according to a single plan. It will be built through concrete achievements which first create a de facto solidarity.’\nWe believe highlighting and celebrating all the various pan European efforts and achievements to make our continent a more inclusive\, more democratic\, more culturally aware\, better place to live\, is a contemporary translation of Schuman’s appeal.\nWe will be launching a dedicated website soon for you to join us in celebrating Europe Day through featured live-streamed discussions and content from European changemakers\, presentations of artists\, thinkers and doers\, amongst our grantees and friends.

SUMMARY:UK Trade and Business Commission: Financial Services
DESCRIPTION:This session will consider the short and long-term impact of the Trade and Cooperation Agreement on the UK’s financial services sector. Witnesses will be asked to outline the nature of UK trade in financial services\, the impact of barriers to trade with the EU\, and opportunities available elsewhere. Whilst the supporting professional services environment in London may be referenced it will not be the main focus of this session. The intention is rather to focus on the detail of the financial services sector\, the nature of the change from member to third country\, how this affects UK trade\, and what practical steps can be taken with the EU and other markets to strengthen the UK.

SUMMARY:Richard Corbett: Why Boris's botched Brexit beggars belief
DESCRIPTION:Richard Corbett\, former Labour MEP and well-informed speaker will explain the background to Boris Johnson’s Brexit deal and discuss the fallout\, followed by Q&A \nSometimes UK public opinion shifts overwhelmingly against something it initially supported (e.g. Suez\, Iraq) when it turns out to be a disaster. Sometimes events cause rapid change. Will the same happen with Brexit? \nThere are numerous consequences of Brexit which are not receiving sufficient publicity. Leaving the EU came at a huge cost to the UK economically\, culturally and in terms of our standing in the world.
