SUMMARY:SORT THE SYSTEM - Lobby for Equal Votes
DESCRIPTION:This Rally for PR organised by Make Votes Matter and the Electoral Reform Society will bring hundreds of people to Westminster on 24 May to demand that our MPs back a change in the voting system – so that everyone has a vote that counts equally. If you want to attend\, sign up at the link below. \n(NB: To prepare for this event\, Action Network are holding an online virtual rally on Zoom on the evening of 18 April – please see separate listing on UK-PEN Key Events Calendar.)

SUMMARY:The Failure of Remain - Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel
DESCRIPTION:Studies of the United Kingdom’s decision to leave the European Union (“Brexit”) have largely focused on the role of politicians and political parties or the characteristics of Leave and Remain voters. \nThe Failure of Remain offers the first comprehensive study of the UK’s grassroots anti-Brexit movement. Emerging in the weeks and months following the June 2016 referendum\, this movement was the most significant and wide-scale mobilization of proEuropean support that the UK had ever witnessed. \nIn The Failure of Remain\, Adam Fagan and Stijn van Kessel assessed participants’ ideologies\, arguments\, and strategies. Drawing evidence from first-hand interviews\, an original survey of anti-Brexit activists\, and an analysis of their campaign materials\, Fagan and van Kessel conclude that\, while the anti-Brexit movement was successful in mobilizing a large number of pro-European citizens\, its impact was limited by weak links to political elites and institutions\, divisions between organizations and activists\, and the absence of a clear stance on the UK’s relationship with the European Union. \nThe Failure of Remain reveals the difficulties of formulating effective pro-European arguments. What lessons for the future can be gleaned from past experiences? What can be learned for campaigns for an ever-closer relationship with the EU and ultimately to Rejoin it? \nAdam Fagan – Professor of European Politics at King’s College London and senior editor of East European Politics. Stijn van Kessel – Reader (Associate Professor) in European Politics\, School of Politics and International Relations\, Queen Mary University of London.

SUMMARY:Citizens and the Constitution: education and engagement
DESCRIPTION:Do citizens understand – or even care about – how the UK constitution works and the role it plays in making government work for them? If they don’t\, then what can be done to ensure that the constitution and constitutional change has public support and legitimacy? \nIn this event\, we will explore the current state of public understanding of – and interest in – constitutional issues. We will look at good practice for citizen engagement. And we will consider what can be done to cultivate an engaged and empowered citizenry for the future. This event is part of the IfG and Bennett Institute Review of the UK Constitution. \nTo explore these questions\, we have assembled an expert panel including: \nCatherine McKinnell MP\, Chair of the Petitions Committee\nLiz Moorse\, Chief Executive of the Association for Citizenship Teaching\nAlan Renwick\, Professor of Democratic Politics at University College London and Deputy Director of UCL’s Constitution Unit\nTatton Spiller\, Founder of Simple Politics\nThe event will be chaired by Rebecca McKee\, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government. \nThis is a hybrid event; follow the link to the event website to find links to register either for in-person or online attendance.

SUMMARY:Does Brexit mean less cultural diversity and weaker creative industries?
DESCRIPTION:Before Brexit and Covid\, our creative industries contributed over 4% to GDP and over £100 billion to the economy. They were in surplus with the EU and the rest of world. However\, they lost 31% of their turnover in 2020. \nNow\, because the UK has decided not to rejoin the EU Creative Europe programme and refuses freedom of movement\, the end of Brexit transition threatens to destroy touring\, performance\, partnership and exchange possibilities with our European neighbours. The government seems to want to banish Europe as a special locus for cooperation/partnership and cultural influence. Why have organisations like the Creative Industries Federation made so little fuss? \nBrexit has meant that our film industry\, which exported more than any other EU country to the rest of the European continent\, has lost access to the EU MEDIA programme – an integral part of the Creative Europe programme. \nWhere is the lobby to re-join this valuable programme? Are our artists\, performers and film makers afraid of repercussions? During 2020\, arts and cultural networks were told that the government would appreciate more congratulations for the little it was doing for the sector. Has this had a chilling effect on our ability to campaign to re-join Creative Europe? \nA Creator’s Council exists to give voice to creators’ interests\, from actors through to fine artists\, but government doesn’t appear to be listening.

SUMMARY:Economic Impact of Brexit
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: THIS EVENT IS FREE\, AND YOU CAN ATTEND EITHER IN PERSON OR ONLINE. More details and Eventbrite ticket links are on the event page \nThere is a widespread view among economists that Brexit has had a substantial negative impact on the UK economy. However\, some economists disagree. This event will bring together economists with different perspectives to discuss the widely publicised estimates by the Centre for European Reform\, the OBR and others including the BriefingsforBritain website\, and to see what common ground if any\, exists on what we know about the economic impacts of Brexit to date.

SUMMARY:Q and A WITH PATIENCE WHEATCROFT AND DOMINIC GRIEVE
DESCRIPTION:The choice of new Chair for EMUK is an opportunity to set the direction of the European Movement\, and so this is a very important election.\nWhat sort of Chair do we want and what do we want this Chair to achieve? What are the key aspects to this role? \nYou may still be undecided\, may have further questions not covered in the hustings or may want further details to help you decide. Patience is more than keen to engage with the members and of course with the organisation itself. This will be a good opportunity for her to meet members\, and for members to learn about her in a more relaxed atmosphere than the hustings.

SUMMARY:Future UK-EU Relations – is there any hope?
DESCRIPTION:A virtual meeting including Q&A with David Henig and Alex Andreou\, discussing the latest developments in our relations with our EU neighbours. . \nOnce again Brexit is at the forefront of public debate. Does the Windsor Protocol mean the Tories have ‘got Brexit done’ or is it a first tentative step towards undoing it? What can we make of the recent cross-party summit allegedly designed to “make Brexit work“? What about the chaotic Retained EU Law Bill\, a rolling juggernaut which the current PM is too weak to stop? \nAgainst all the uncertainty\, opinion polls are starting to show a significant majority not only regretting Brexit but also favouring the principle of rejoining. Yet politicians on both sides lag behind public opinion. Where is a possible landing point to solve the interminable problems that Brexit has caused\, given that politicians on both sides have ruled out rejoining the Single Market\, at least for the time being? Is there room for any hope? \nWe are pleased to welcome two expert speakers from different but complementary backgrounds\, who will most certainly give us a lot to think about\, and are happy to answer questions from the audience Speaker profiles are on the event page.

SUMMARY:The Effects of Brexit on Women in the United Kingdom
DESCRIPTION:Much has been discussed about the wide-ranging consequences of the UK’s departure from the European Union\, especially in terms of the economy and mobility. However\, very little has been said about the social consequences particularly for women and their status in society and in the employment market. This topic is now being widely discussed in view of the government’s determination to push through as quickly as possible the Retained EU Law bill which will remove the legislation still in force from the period when Britain was a member of the EU\, much of which refers to social issues. \nThe Anglo-German Society\, Dortmund \, in association with Leeds For Europe\, would like to invite you to a Zoom talk by Ms Amanda Nanhoo-Robinson\, an experienced British barrister\, who will give an overview of the situation of women in Britain today and how the REUL Bill would affect their status in British society in the future. There will also be ample time for questions. To attend the event\, please join via the Zoom link below at the stated time\, using the Meeting ID 831 8848 5587 and the Passcode 646441

SUMMARY:Katy Hayward: Why the Northern Ireland Protocol is a Great British concern (and not for the reasons you think)
DESCRIPTION:Katy Hayward\, Professor of Political Sociology\, Queen’s University Belfast will discuss the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland that was signed as part of the UK-EU withdrawal Agreement in 2019 and was intended to resolve the particular difficulties for Northern Ireland arising from Brexit. But instead of clearing Northern Ireland from the UK and EU’s post-Brexit radars\, the debate around the Protocol has been central to tensions between them ever since. Katy will look at the Protocol from a slightly different perspective\, drawing on close monitoring of the Protocol’s development and implementation. She will show why the Protocol should be a concern to the public in Great Britain because of what it seeks to protect\, because of the way it has been handled\, and because what happens to it in future – for good or ill – will have implications for the whole of the United Kingdom.
