SUMMARY:Defending Human Rights in Europe and the UK
DESCRIPTION:The UK used to have a much-lauded reputation for safeguarding and promoting human rights. and the European Court of Human Rights and the Convention that goes with it are very much inspired by post-War British politicians and thinkers. But Dominic Raab\, restored to his post as Justice Secretary\, is determined to press ahead with legislation on giving a proposed British Bill of Rights precedence over the ECHR – not least by enabling deportation flights to Rwanda and elsewhere. How has it come to this? Join us in our latest webinar which will focus on the threat to human rights in the UK and elsewhere and the role of the ECHR in upholding them. \nRegister for this Zoom event via the Eventbrite link below.

SUMMARY:Democracy and the Future of Britain
DESCRIPTION:Our hyper-centralised Westminster government is no longer working for so many people – but what is the alternative? This hybrid event (in person and online) is a conversation about national identity\, devolution\, and independence. But it’s also a discussion about electoral reform\, the need for a written constitution\, and the wholesale democratic renewal we all need. \nJournalist and former presenter of Newsnight Gavin Esler has travelled around the country documenting the rise of nationalism in all four nations\, and considering the consequences for the United Kingdom as a whole. Join us in conversation with Gavin about how democratic renewal might be the answer to to Britain’s problems. \nYou can attend this event either online or in person. SUMMARY:A perfect storm of crises: Virtual meeting with Lord John Alderdice and Vicky Pryce
DESCRIPTION:The harms done to the UK’s economy and reputation by Brexit have been compounded by the pandemic\, Ukraine and the cost of living crisis. At the same time the country is suffering an absence of competent leadership and a collapse of trust in government. Remorse over the Northern Ireland Protocol is raising the threat of political instability and trade war with our nearest neighbours. \nTo discuss the crisis: John Alderdice\, Baron Alderdice\, of Knock in the City of Belfast is a former Northern Ireland politician. As Leader of the Alliance Party of Northern Ireland he played a significant role in negotiating the 1998 Good Friday Agreement\, and when the Northern Ireland Assembly was elected\, he became its first Speaker. Since 1996 has sat in the House of Lords as a Liberal Democrat. \nAnd Vicky Pryce\, one of our best-known economic commentators. Her recent posts have included: Senior Managing Director at FTI Consulting; Director General for Economics at the Department for Business\, Innovation and Skills (BIS); and Joint Head of the UK Government Economics Service where she was responsible for evidence based policy and for encouraging measures that promoted greater productivity in the UK economy. She co-founded GoodCorporation\, a company set up to promote corporate social responsibility.

SUMMARY:The Art of Communication
DESCRIPTION:How can we persuade people who are not yet pro-EU to change their minds? There is now strong evidence that we don’t do it by arguing with them or bombarding them with statistics: these methods don’t work. A different approach\, “Deep Canvassing”\, aims to change political opinions by means of a non-confrontational conversation\, using empathic listening and real life stories in preference to argument and presentation of facts and figures. Developed in the United States\, Deep Canvassing is backed by a strong evidence base\, and has been used to good effect in many campaigns\, including the 2020 presidential election. \nThe webinar will be followed by an online introductory training event\, intended to embed Deep Canvassing into the pro-EU campaign on 27 October – details to follow. \nSpeakers:\n• Ella Barrett (The Leadership Lab\, Los Angeles): Deep Canvassing: An Introduction\n◦ Ella is one of the developers of Deep Canvassing and has ten years experience of training volunteers to use it\n• Josh Kalla (Yale University): Deep Canvassing: The Evidence\n◦ Josh was recruited at the outset to evaluate Deep Canvassing and has conducted numerous studies\n• Richard Kilpatrick (European Movement): Deep Canvassing: The UK Experience\n◦ Richard is one of very few UK campaigners with experience of using Deep Canvassing and training volunteers

SUMMARY:Democracy Loves Local Power
DESCRIPTION:The UK is the most centralised country in Western Europe\, and First Past the Post is not helping. FPTP’s ‘winner takes all’ culture draws power further into Westminster\, and incentivises those wielding that power to keep it with themselves. ‘Levelling up democracy’ is therefore increasingly becoming a part of discussions of how we address regional inequalities. \nIn this event\, we will highlight how PR can help rebalance power across the UK\, and how countries with Proportional Representation have often been more effective at levelling up. \nJoin our cross-party panel of speakers: \nJane Dodds\, Liberal Democrat MS \nDavid Ford\, former Alliance Party Leader and MLA \nZack Polanski\, Green Party London AM \nTommy Sheppard\, Scottish National Party MP \nPaul Sweeney\, Labour Party MSP \nJackie Weaver (chair) \nPresentations\, followed by a Q&A\, will be recorded and uploaded to YouTube afterwards.
