SUMMARY:The fight for the ECHR: What is at stake?
DESCRIPTION:Now\, the people responsible for Brexit want to remove the UK from the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR)\, the international court set up in the aftermath of the Second World War to protect people from tyranny. \nSince the UK became a member of the ECHR\, the court has intervened 466 times to uphold human rights against the government. \nWe are calling on Rishi Sunak to commit to our membership of the European Court of Human Rights because it is the last line of defence of our rights and freedoms. To support this mission\, we launched the petition to keep the UK in the ECHR. \nTo discuss this vital issue\, we have brought together three of the leading experts on the ECHR:\nDominic Grieve KC PC – Dominic is a British barrister and former politician. Today\, Dominic is Vice President of European Movement UK (Source: Wiki). \nJessica Simor KC – Jessica is recognised as one of the country’s leading specialists in public/regulatory\, EU and human rights law. (Source: Matrix Chambers). \nAndrew Cutting – Andrew is Spokesperson and Media Officer at the Council of Europe\, a role he has held for almost 14 years. (Source: LinkedIn).

And the EU Elections\, coming up on June 6th\, are a pivotal moment for Europe as 400 million voters will decide the make-up of the European Parliament for the next 5 years. \nWhilst the UK is of course not taking part in these elections\, it is essential that we have an understanding of the likely outcomes and potential impacts of this election\, that of our closest neighbour and biggest trading partner\, and grapple with what these mean for the next stage of the UK-EU relationship. \nThe speakers: \nStephanie Luke is a Research Associate based in the Department of Politics and International Relations at The University of Sheffield. Since the Brexit referendum\, he has concentrated on strengthening democratic governance in Europe. Garvan chairs the pro-democracy NGO Unhack Democracy\, which works on strengthening civil society in East Central Europe\, and is a Director of Communications at the European Policy Centre\, as well as a research associate on defence policy at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies and an affiliate at the Central European University Democracy Institute. He writes a regular column for Conservative Home in the UK. \nJacki Davis is a Brussels-based journalist\, broadcaster and editor and a Senior Adviser to the European Policy Centre (EPC) think tank. SUMMARY:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED Freedom of Movement: the Key to Rejoin - A toolkit for pro-EU campaigners THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN POSTPONED \nFreedom of movement of people (along with free movement of goods\, services\, and capital)\, is a fundamental principle of the EU Single Market. There can be no return to the Single Market or the EU without FoM.  \nOpposition to FoM is based on a mistaken belief that FoM means uncontrolled immigration. The public is not well informed on this issue\, a factor which greatly assisted the leave campaign. People are now becoming more aware that ending FoM affects their own and their families’ choices\, as well as undermining the UK economy\, impacting the workforce in key industries\, impeding business travel and decimating the arts. FoM is strongly supported by the public in all EU member states. \nThe aim of this webinar is to equip pro-EU activists for a campaign to restore FoM\, and so open the door to Single Market and EU membership.  \nThe webinar will provide the basis for a crib sheet for FoM campaigners.  \nChair: Richard Kilpatrick (Campaign Manager\, European Movement) \nMichaela Benson (Professor in Public Sociology\, Lancaster University): Debunking FoM myths \nRichard Bentall (Professor of Clinical Psychology\, Sheffield University) : A positive narrative on FoM \nMark English (Policy and Media Advisor\, European Movement) : Strategy and tactics for a campaign to restore FoM \nMike Galsworthy (Chair\, European Movement) : On the timing of a campaign to restore FoM

SUMMARY:Europe Calling “Eine neue Verfassung für Europa” - " A new Constitution for Europe"
DESCRIPTION:The European Union could soon be writing a new constitution: on Wednesday\, 25.10.2023\, the Constitutional Affairs Committee (AFCO) of the European Parliament will vote on whether the EU Parliament should start the process for amendments to the EU Treaties and whether a Constitutional Convention should be convened for this purpose. \nThe initiative to amend the treaties is supported by all five pro-democracy groups in the Parliament. \nThe ambitious changes suggested include: national vetoes to give way to majority decisions\, the European Parliament to become a more powerful legislator with equal rights and the EU Commission to become a real government – subordinate to the Parliament. That is\, fundamental changes to the EU – as was demanded by the citizens at the EU Future Conference. \nThe five MEPs who have been dealing with these questions will lead the discussion together with representatives from science\, civil society and politics. \nIn German and English.

SUMMARY:Citizens and the Constitution: education and engagement
DESCRIPTION:Do citizens understand – or even care about – how the UK constitution works and the role it plays in making government work for them? If they don’t\, then what can be done to ensure that the constitution and constitutional change has public support and legitimacy? \nIn this event\, we will explore the current state of public understanding of – and interest in – constitutional issues. We will look at good practice for citizen engagement. And we will consider what can be done to cultivate an engaged and empowered citizenry for the future. This event is part of the IfG and Bennett Institute Review of the UK Constitution. \nTo explore these questions\, we have assembled an expert panel including: \nCatherine McKinnell MP\, Chair of the Petitions Committee\nLiz Moorse\, Chief Executive of the Association for Citizenship Teaching\nAlan Renwick\, Professor of Democratic Politics at University College London and Deputy Director of UCL’s Constitution Unit\nTatton Spiller\, Founder of Simple Politics\nThe event will be chaired by Rebecca McKee\, Senior Researcher at the Institute for Government. \nThis is a hybrid event; follow the link to the event website to find links to register either for in-person or online attendance.

SUMMARY:Webinar with Denis MacShane on the Politics of Brexit Now - Haringey for Europe
DESCRIPTION:…where we are at present and how grassroots pro-EU organisations can contribute. \n\nDenis MacShane\, a former UK Minister of Europe\, has discussed Brexit with the current Prime Minister\, Boris Johnson\, the past leader of the Opposition\, Jeremy Corbyn\, the new president of the European Commission\, Ursula von der Leyen\, and Michel Barnier\, a personal friend for 20 years. He has worked as a consultant advising governments\, businesses and NGOs on Brexit. He will use his extensive knowledge and experience to share and explain where we are at the moment and how grassroots pro EU groups can contribute to the unfolding events as we leave the European Union. His most recent book\, Brexiternity: The Uncertain Fate of Britain demonstrates how politics\, business and society in the UK will continue to be dominated by Brexit\, regardless of whether or not the UK crashes out with No Deal or if a Withdrawal Agreement is reached. He predicted the referendum outcome in his 2015 book Brexit: How Britain will Leave Europe.
