SUMMARY:30 Years After the Fall of the Iron Curtain - Europe’s Pasts and Futures
DESCRIPTION:The transformation of Europe – Thirty Years On\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout this Event\n\n\nTalk location: Pankhurst Building Room G.01\, Clement’s Inn\, LSE \n1989 was a moment of hope and democracy for Europe. In June\, nearly 30 million Italians voted for a united Europe – some 88 per cent of voters on an 81 per cent turnout. From the summer onwards in Hungary and Poland decisive steps were taken towards multiparty democracy. By the end of the year\, in the most iconic events of 1989\, the Peaceful Revolution erupted in East Germany. \nThe end of communism had come into view and the dawn of a politically united Europe had arrived.Thirty years on the hopes of ’89 have met their difficult realities. Nationalism often appears to trump unity. Technocratic integration has still not had its ‘Monnet moment’ and led to real political unity. Yet the need for Europe is also stronger than ever. From climate change to globalisation cooperation is a necessity not a luxury. \nThe panel will bring together the ‘1989’ and ‘Millennial’ generations to build a unique dialogue about Europe’s past and future. \n\nBarbara Einhorn is Emeritus Professor of Gender Studies at the University of Sussex and author of Cinderella Goes to Market Citizenship; Gender and Women’s Movements in East Central Europe (Verso\, 1993).\nAlena Ivanova grew up in Bulgaria in the 1990s and is today an anti-Brexit campaigner in London with the Another Europe Is Possible campaign.\nMary Kaldor is a professor of Global Governance at the LSE and was a leading figure in the European peace and human rights movement of the 1980s.\nAna Oppenheim grew up in Poland in the 1990s and today is an anti-Brexit campaigner in London with Another Europe Is Possible.\nGert Weisskirchen is a former member of the German Bundestag and was active in European Nuclear Disarmament in the 1980s.\n\n*** With welcome and introductory remarks from Christos Katsioulis\, Director of the London office of the Friedrich Ebert Stiftung. \nThe event will be followed by drinks and refreshments in the ground floor of the LSE Centre Building on Houghton Street.

SUMMARY:From the European Union to the Human Federation - The Federal Trust
DESCRIPTION:Lecture and Discussion with Tony Czarnecki\, presenting his forthcoming book: \n\n\n\nDemocracy for Human Federation – Coexisting with Superintelligence \n\n\nRespondent: David Wood\, Chair of London Futurists and Co-Founder of the Transhumanist Party \nThe faults in the democratic system have been with us for quite some time. At the same time\, the crisis of democracy coincides with the increasing danger arising from a number of man-made existential risks\, such as a global warming\, biotechnology or a global nuclear war\, which can happen at any time. Among the biggest risks facing Humanity in the next two decades is Artificial Intelligence (AI)\, and in particular its mature form Superintelligence – also called Artificial General Intelligence (AGI). This is the type of AI that will be thousands of times more intelligent than all humans\, and which could wipe out the human species either by a malicious intent or because of an erroneous design. \nSo\, how could humans save themselves from such a potentially perilous future? The overall solution lies in a deep reform of democracy and in changing our view from an insular\, national perspective and instead focus on the Humanity’s survival. We need a new system of democracy for two reasons. The first one is to help us navigate the next several decades safely by being united in a Human Federation created with new principles of democracy. The second one is to create Superintelligence that would inherit our Universal Values and our democratic principles so that it becomes our friend rather than an adversary. \nHowever\, to have any meaningful impact\, a deep reform of democracy must happen really quickly\, by about 2030\, while we may still retain control over the maturing Superintelligence. We have no time to create a new global organization with sufficient economic\, technological and military powers that could initially act as a de facto World Government. The most realistic option seems to be to convert and existing organization\, which could be being gradually converted into a Human Federation. \nTony Czarnecki will argue that despite the current adversary tide in the European Union\, it is this organization\, selected out of 10 possible candidates\, which after being converted into the European Federation\, has the best chance to become the foothold for the future Human Federation. \nAbout Tony Czarnecki \n\n\n\nTony Czarnecki \nFounder and Managing Partner\, Sustenis Ltd \n\n\nTony Czarnecki is an economist and a member of Chatham House\, deeply engaged in global politics and the reform of democracy. He is also an active member of London Futurists. His very wide interests spreading into politics\, technology\, science and economics\, gave him the necessary insight for searching for the solutions to minimizing Humanity’s existential risks. That was the subject of his previous book: “Who could save Humanity from Superintelligence?” In his new book ‘Democracy for Human Federation – Coexisting with Superintelligence”\, he focuses on the scope of reforms needed for democracy to withstand the Humanity’s challenges to coexist with Superintelligence in the very near future. \n\nF

SUMMARY:Let Us Be Heard March
DESCRIPTION:The march from Park Lane to Parliament will deliver a message loud and clear to the Government and MPs that they should trust the people\, not Boris Johnson\, to solve the Brexit crisis. \nOctober 19 will give the people of the UK the chance to make their voice heard just 24 hours after the end of the European Council meeting in Brussels – ahead of a tumultuous few days that will have a huge and historic impact on our country’s future. \nThis Brexit crisis has now come down to a simple question about whether we live in a democracy: can we allow Boris Johnson to force No Deal – or another vicious form of Brexit – on our country\, without all of us having our voice heard? \nThis protest will give voice to all of us who feel they are being ignored by politicians hell-bent on imposing the hardest possible form of Brexit on our country without us all being given final say. We know it can make a difference because our previous marches already have. \nThe only way to break the deadlock in Parliament\, legitimise the outcome and allow us all to talk about something else\, is to give the people the final say. \nSave the date. And let’s save the country.

SUMMARY:Rally 4 Our Rights
DESCRIPTION:Following the change in date of the People’s Vote march\, social media became awash with messages from people who had already paid for their travel to London on the 12th October. \nIn order to make sure that those people had not made the financial commitment in vain\, we decided to make the most out of the situation and organise a rally for those who are unable to change their travel plans. Rally 4 Our Rights was born. \nSo join us on the 12th in central London (location TBC) for a rally to demand the rights of people – All people – are defended. \nThis event is being organised by Final Say For All @FinalSayForAll \nAs a foundation\, our focus is on the human impact of Brexit\, how #BrexitIsPersonal. We campaign to stop Brexit because that’s the best way to protect the rights of #The5Million. The Foundation is committed to ensuring voting rights for all UK citizens currently living in the European Union\, and for all EU citizens living in the UK\, who are directly affected by any change in relationship between the UK and the EU. Ideally Article 50 will be revoked\, but should there be another referendum\, we demand that it’s a @FinalSayForAll \nhttp://finalsayforall.eu \nhttps://facebook.com/finalsayforall/

SUMMARY:Never Ending Brexit? Macshane and Blick
DESCRIPTION:NEVER-ENDING BREXIT?\n\n\n Joint event with Federal Union \nTuesday\, 8th October 2019 \n17.30 – 19.30\, followed by a drinks reception \nVenue: Coventry University London (Postgraduate Centre and Financial Suite)\, Cutlers Exchange\, Cutler Street Entrance\, London E1 7DJ (near Travelodge) \nRSVP to events@fedtrust.co.uk or by phone on024 7765 1102 \n  \nDr Denis MacShane\, former MP and Europe Minister under Tony Blair\, will discuss the latest developments in the Brexit debate\, such as the implications of the prorogation of Parliament and a possible General Election. He argues that the European question will remain the defining political issue of our time\, with the prospect of a decade or more of bad-tempered negotiations\, internal political rows\, and uncertainty for business and citizens. \nDr. Andrew Blick\, Senior Lecturer in Politics and Contemporary History at King’s College London\, will speak about the constitutional implications of recent debate concerning the prorogation of Parliament and the relative rights of government and Parliament in international negotiations. He will argue that the uncertainty and controversy surrounding this debate reinforce the case for a written\, probably federal constitution for the UK. \nRespondent: Brendan Donnelly\, Director\, The Federal Trust

SUMMARY:Brexit Unspun\, Overcoming the Web of Deceit.
DESCRIPTION:Gavin Esler\, Rachel Clarke\, Andrew Adonis : Brexit Unspun\, Overcoming the Web of Deceit.\n\n\nby Oxford For Europe\n\n\nGavin Esler\, Rachel Clarke\, Andrew Adonis : Brexit Unspun\, Overcoming the Web of Deceit.\nBoris Johnson’s government and its threatened no-deal Brexit are an immediate threat to our security\, our livelihoods and our children’s future. \nTo put a stop to this malignant project\, people must be able to see through the lies which have enabled and driven the Brexit agenda\, from the 2016 referendum down to today. The time to act is very short\, the stakes are as high as they could be. Three renowned supporters of the People’s Vote campaign join Oxford for Europe for this major public event to discuss the Brexit lies and how we can share the truth about them before it’s too late. \nVeteran BBC reporter Gavin Esler‘s Brexit Without The Bullshit: The Facts on Food\, Jobs\, Travel and the NHS [Canbury Press] was published on 27 June. Gavin will be signing copies of the book before and after this event. \nMixing personal anecdotes\, reportage and expert reports\, Brexit Without The Bullshit calculates the impact of a no deal and reveals “the damage that leaving the European Union has done\, and will do\, to schools\, hospitals\, businesses and other important areas of British life”. \nGavin comments: “This book was inspired by the misinformation\, disinformation and blatant lies of those who have brought us Brexit. They clearly have no idea what they are doing and are putting at risk what is left of the unity of the United Kingdom. The Brexit fiasco has created an image of our great country which looks incompetent and divided to the rest of the world and a political system which is no longer fit for purpose. \n“My aim has been to offer the facts about what Brexit will mean for our daily lives – from the food we eat to how we will source our medicines\, where our health care workers will come from to what travel in Europe will look like. My only regret is these facts were not discussed when we voted in the 2016 referendum. I hope Brexit Without The Bullshit will help us think again.” \nwww.canburypress.com \nDr Rachel Clarke is an English physician specialising in palliative care for the National Health Service\, author\, journalist and activist. She works at the Sobell House is Oxford. \nFormerly a current affairs journalist\, Rachel retrained to work as a doctor in 2009. From 2015 she had an active voice in the dispute in the United Kingdom between junior doctors and the government over their contractual conditions of work\, appearing in multiple television debates and interviews. Her book Your Life In My Hands – a Junior Doctor’s Story was published in 2017. \nVia twitter\, rallies and media interventions she has been a tireless and incisive critic of the ravages of austerity and privatisation in the NHS\, and of the mounting damage and grave future threat of Brexit to local heathcare services. She has also been a public supporter of the People’s Vote campaign. \nDr Clarke comments: “The principle of informed consent underpins everything we do as doctors\, respecting patients and putting them first. I would never treat a patient by keeping them in the dark\, and imposing my wishes upon them. And I expect our elected representatives to show us\, the electorate\, the same basic respect\, allowing our informed decisions to guide them.” \nhttps://blogs.bmj.com/bmj/2018/11/13/rachel-clarke-why-as-a-doctor-i-support-an-informed-peoples-vote/ \nRachel Clarke’s next book\, Dear Life: A Doctor’s Story of Love and Loss is published by Little\, Brown in January. She writes: \n“If there is a difference between people who know they are dying and the rest of us\, it is simply this: that the terminally ill know their time is running out\, while we live as though we have all the time in the world. In a hospice\, therefore\, there is more of what matters in life – more love\, more strength\, more kindness\, more smiles\, more dignity\, more joy\, more tenderness\, more grace\, more compassion – than you could ever imagine. \nDear Life is a love letter – to a father\, a profession\, to life itself.” \n@doctor_oxford \nLord Andrew Adonis is a politician\, academic and journalist\, a Labour peer and a former Minister for Education and Secretary of State for Transport. He is a vice-chair of the European Movement. He was a Fellow in History and Politics at Nuffield College and from 1987 until 1991 an Oxford City Councillor for the Social Democratic Party and later the Liberal Democrats\, representing the North Ward. He resigned from leadership of the National Infrastructure Commission in December 2017 because of the Government’s approach to Brexit\, and has since then been campaigning against Brexit in Parliament\, the media\, many public events\, and an ongoing speaking tour across the UK\, including many Leave voting areas. He is co-author with Will Hutton of Saving Britain: How We Must Change to Prosper in Europe (Little\, Brown\, 2018). \nHis campaign website is at https://www.andrewadonis.org/ . Andrew has spoken several times about Brexit at events in Oxford\, including Oxford for Europe’s regional rally in Broad Street (March\, 2018). \nIn his latest comment he writes: \n“Now Dominic Cummings is joint prime minister\, we have to take him seriously as more than a Vote Leave operative. I have therefore been reading all those interminable blogs on Bismarck\, eugenics and American fighter pilots. I thought they’d be weird. Actually they are dangerous. \nThe weird bits are the obsession with physical combat and IQ. This explains his wild pugilism. And why Michael Gove\, the first of Cummings’s minister-pupils\, did so much to wreck England’s schools by decreeing that fewer and fewer teenagers should pass more and more exams. \n\nIt seems Cummings now plans to “Darwin-ise” the nation\, not just the education system. Enter Otto von Bismarck\, founding chancellor of the Second Reich. It is hard to conceive a more dangerous inspiration.” \n\nhttps://www.independent.co.uk/voices/dominic-cummings-boris-johnson-otto-von-bismarck-brexit-a9045941.html \nThe meeting will be chaired by Jocasta Gardner\, Oxford for Europe.
