SUMMARY:Climate crisis\, pandemic\, war at our borders\, democratic backsliding\, rising socio-economic inequalities: Young people in Europe stand at the centre of the so-called polycrisis. Fear\, distrust\, and a sense of uncertainty are putting a strain on what lies at the core of European integration: an ever-growing sense of togetherness among an increasingly larger citizenry. In these challenging times\, can we find a path to advance a hopeful European project grounded in fairness\, sustainability\, and democratic renewal? What role can you play as an active young European citizen and student?

SUMMARY:Trump's ten revolutions: the remaking of politics in the west
DESCRIPTION:US President Donald Trump has a massive impact on global politics from potential peace settlements in Ukraine to global tariffs\, the military intervention in Iran\, the viability of a common climate change agenda and far beyond. At the same time\, he is also a highly interventionist president within the United States. \nAnalysts regularly focus on the ad-hoc character of his interventions and his assumed dependence on last minute influences and sudden mood changes. This creates the impression that actions are largely unforeseeable and therefore cannot be prepared for. \nDuring this talk\, it will be argued on the contrary that\, behind the seemingly chaotic daily events\, there are well reflected strategic changes of US policy that can be known and allow for reflected policy responses: the 10 revolutions of Donald Trump. \nSpeaker: Klaus Welle\, Visiting Professor in Practice at the LSE European Institute. \nChair: Kevin Featherstone\, Emeritus Professor (European Institute) and Professorial Research Fellow in the Hellenic Observatory at LSE

SUMMARY:Grassroots for Europe Round Table: Resisting the Trump Assault: will American democracy survive and what can we do to help? A webinar with Alexandra Hall Hall
DESCRIPTION:Alexandra Hall Hall resigned from her post as Brexit counsellor at the UK Embassy in Washington on December 6th 2019\, three days before the UK general election\, declaring in a devastating critique of the UK government her unwillingness to “peddle half-truths on behalf of a government I do not trust”. Her action established Alex as a valued public truth-teller of the Brexit era. \nIn this webinar we are talking to Alex about the state and future of government and democracy in the USA\, where she lives and is now a citizen. Alex has a longstanding inside view of US politics\, having been seconded by the Foreign Office to serve as an expert in US government during the early millennium.

SUMMARY:Europe's Democracy in Deeper Danger
DESCRIPTION:Within the EU\, autocratic contagion\, recently checked in Poland\, has spread from Hungary to other neighbouring countries. Authoritarian populist parties of the Right have made gains at European and national levels and threaten to make more. Trump’s recent victory in the USA poses a lethal threat to America’s democracy\, fractures Western support for Ukraine and borders on open collusion with Putin’s genocidal imperial aggression. The new UK government appears to understand the challenge\, but Brexit and its legacy continue to hamper the response. For pro-Europeans in the UK\, regaining the trust of Europe may have seemed the key condition for ending the blight of Brexit; now\, the priority may shift towards urgent\, committed solidarity with democratic Europe (and democrats worldwide) in the defence of Europe’s democracy. \nOur three panellists each bring highly relevant insights\, engagement and experiences to our discussion of this tangle of dangers. \nPeter Geoghegan is an outstanding\, award-winning Irish investigative journalist who has done groundbreaking work on the US-UK (and US-UK-Russian) nexus of dark money and oligarchic business power\, notably as key drivers of Brexit. \nDr Nina Shengelia is in the forefront of citizen efforts\, notably in the digital domain\, to combat current Russian hybrid assaults on Georgia’s democracy and defend its geopolitical independence as a candidate for EU membership. \nWojciech Przybylski\, a Polish political scientist and journalist is editor-in-chief of Visegrad Insight\, a major investigative\, reporting and analysis site for politics across the Central European countries.

SUMMARY:Julian Priestley Memorial Lecture - "What one generation does\, so the next can undo" by Alastair Campbell
DESCRIPTION:The 5th Annual Julian Priestley Memorial Lecture \n \nJulian Priestley was one of the first generation of British EU Civil Servants\, rising to become its Secretary General from 1997 to 2007. \nAfter his premature death in 2017\, a number of his friends decided that a fitting way to mark his European commitment would be to establish an annual lecture in his honour. This lecture is designed to provide an opportunity for prominent speakers to contribute to the ongoing debate about the European Union in the United Kingdom.
